Sunday Sweets & Sunsets

Well, it seems I can't go more than a day without posting, because so many things are happening and I'll get behind and end up with posts that take up the whole page.
Yesterday was a great relaxing day. On Sundays, almost everything on the island is closed, except the bakery and some select food places. Also, most things close here around 2pm for their kind of "siesta" time.

I've been waking up around 8ish each morning (and going to bed around 11ish each night, it's great I'm actually tired. OH and I've been letting my curls loose more, seems only natural here but for those of you back home you realize that's a big step!) Yesterday I grabbed my crackers and cheese, strawberries, and cup of orange juice and sat on my little balcony in the sunshine and read more of The Hunger Games (that book is so hard to put down, I finished it last night). The man who owns where we're staying was cleaning a neighboring porch and shouted out, "Good morning beautiful how did you sleep?" ...seriously.
After a great breakfast I headed to the rooftop and Carleigh and I sat in the sun until our orientation started.

We found a perfect little spot that shielded the wind, and in direct sunlight, so that when everyone else was apparently chilly in orientation, we were burning up and ended up with a bit of a sunburn.
All the teachers sound incredibly passionate about what they teach, and every subject sounds like alot of fun (and hopefully not too much work). I am currently signed up for 6 classes, 18 units, we'll see how that goes. I kinda switched around the classes I was originally thinking about doing but here's what I ended up with:
Film Studies, Goddess, Theory of Art (required for school credit at Loma)
Black & White Photography, Digital Imaging, and the Historical Sites class (which field trips all over the island and various places to learn about the history, never have I been so excited for a history class.)

After signing up for classes, a group of us wanted to walk around the island to get a sense of where things were, despite everything being closed. We didn't end up far at first, stopping at the beach at the end of our street. The wind had died down making it warmer than usual, and we found ourselves collecting smooth white stones and seaglass along the waters edge. The water is so clear, many things here remind me of the Lake Mead trips I took in high school with my youth group.
We ran into a man originally from Egypt, who now works at a bakery close by, who's job entails making different kinds of bread. We taught him a few words in English "Pediatrics", "Crash", "Memorial" and he was very sweet, we had to talk very slow and use simple sentences so he could understand but all in all his English was pretty good. We stopped at the local bakery here (not the one he works at) and picked out 3 mini desserts to try and are determined to go back to try more (they have so many wonderful looking things, good thing the rest of my greek diet has been mainly healthy).

By then the sun was going down, and let me tell you when the sun goes down it gets COLD, fast. So we said goodbye to our new friend Fathy (who even paid for our desserts!) and speed walked back to our rooms, stopping only momentarily to take pictures of the beautiful sunset on the way back.
The rest of my night was spent watching the movie "Midnight in Paris" with the rest of my group and working on my online traffic school tests which I hopefully finish soon.
Starting to miss everyone from home a bit more, but I keep telling myself these three months are going to fly by, especially with my 6 classes and various trips.

That little ball is like dried up seaweed, all along the waters edge

Going to try and take a picture of the sunset each night

  2. I read your blog to mom/nana, and she enjoyed it very much. Of course, you met a man who bought your pastries. I was going to ask about your food budget when you eat out so much!
